Did you know that according to a recent study by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), 25% of school-aged children have vision problems, yet 85% of children begin school without a proper eye exam!

At Downtown Vision | Optometrists, we are here to take care of you and your family’s eye care. An essential part of your child’s growth and development is dependent on vision.

As a child doesn’t know what good vision looks like, they often move through life by accommodating for any issues. Some children with poor vision are mistakenly labelled as having a learning disability or behavioural problems.

Many parents mistakenly believe that a “passed” vision screening conducted by their child’s pediatrician or school indicates that their child has healthy eyes. However, these screenings only check for visual acuity and not the health of the rest of the eye. The only way to know your child’s eye health with certainty is to have a comprehensive eye exam conducted by your optometrist.

Downtown Vision | Optometrists is part of the Eye See…Eye Learn® program. This program provides comprehensive eye exams by participating local optometrists to junior kindergarten students across Ontario. The eye exams are covered under provincial health insurance (or OHIP) when you show your child’s health card. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam.

Eye exams for all children 19 and under are covered by OHIP!

  • A child should have their first eye exam between 6-9 months of age to check for issues such as amblyopia (“lazy eye”).
  • Then, before the start of school, a child should have an eye exam between the ages of 2-5.
  • For school-aged children, they should have an eye exam yearly.

Please bring your child into Downtown Vision | Optometrists and give them the best start in life.
